Veronica Leaves for Home

Didn't she just get here yesterday?  It seems so short, but yet it has been just over five weeks since they arrived.  Therapy is completed.  Her prostheses have been inspected and adjusted where needed.  Now she is in Lima, Peru, on her way home to Arequipa for another year.

The past five weeks have been hectic, but enjoyable.  Veronica is doing excellent with her English.  She is also teaching Nancy to speak Spanish.  Nancy can now say 'Si' and 'Hola', although with a decided West Virginia accent, and is thinking about a vacation in Cancun.

Some photos are posted on Veronica's weblog at http://veronica-andes.blogspot.com/  If you visit, drop her a line.  I know she would be glad to hear from you.

Our next project is Frank and Tatiana, who will be arriving soon for their first appointment, April 4.

Veronica

Veronica and Ynes arrived at Tampa International Airport this morning after a long overnight flight from Lima.  After a late breakfast they are now resting in preparation for their first appointment this year at Shriners Hospital.  More information will follow this evening, maybe a photo, after we see their tentative schedule for the next few weeks.  Support for Veronica and our work with children in need is welcome.  Contact us at TheLuzFund@verizon.net.  Donations are tax deductable as advised by your tax consultant.

As promised, here is a current photo of Veronica and Ynes, relaxing in the garden at home in Brandon a day after their long flight and appointment at Shriners.  Their next visit to Shriners is not until Feb 1 when Therapy will start.  Additional info will be published on Veronicas blog at:  http://veronica-andes.blogspot.com/  .

UPDATE: Frank & Tatiana

Great News from Shriners.  Both Frank and Tatiana have been accepted as patients at Shriners Hospital for Children, Tampa, FL.  The news actually came last Friday, but I wanted to wait until it was confirmed with an appointment date.  That date is Wednesday, April 4, 2012.  So Christmas comes early this year.  We are so happy to be able to send the news to Juanjui.  Thanks to so many who have prayed for this decision.  Now the work starts to find funds for their travel.

October Medical Mission

Our medical team has returned home after two weeks working in the small town of Juanjui, Peru, and several villages along the Rio Hullaga and far reaches of the Rio Alto Huayabamba.
Through the kindness of the Catholic Medical Mission Board,(CMMB) New York City, and Brother’s Brother Foundation,(BBF) Pittsburgh, PA, we were able to bring some much needed medications and anti-biotics to people in some of the poorest areas of the country.
Directing the Medical team was an excellent Physician from Plant City, FL, accompanied by two exceptional Nurses from Brandon, FL and San Antonio, TX. As in June, three Ophthamalogy doctors from Lima, Peru, joined The Luz Fund mission team to continue eye exams, treatments and surgery.
Along with about 500 medical patients seen by our medical team, approximately 600 Eye Exams
were processed. The team worked at the brand new Regional Juanjui Hospital for the Poor
for the first week. We then travelled to several river villages during week two.

Every visit to Juanjui brings new experiences, new friends, and new opportunities to do God’s will by helping those in need. This time we visited two children in their home, Frank, 12 yrs old, and his sister Tatiana, 6 yrs old.(see photos at right) Both children suffer from the same birth defect, bi-lateral club feet that turn inward at the ankles. We hope to interest Shriners Hospital, Tampa to take them as patients.
Arturo Ullao Guerra, the young boy whose photo is also on our blog, is still in Los Ninos Hospital, Lima, while we continue to await completion of treatment for his blood
infection problems.

A photo slide show of the mission activities will be available soon.

Eye Care Mission a Success

Photos from Eye Care Mission

Our Eye Care Mission to Juanjui, Peru, climaxed last week with 17 surgeries by Dr Javier Geronimo Meza. This mission was a great cooperative effort initiated by The Luz Fund. The Institute of Optometry and Science, VOSH International, The Carlos Slim Foundation and the Clinton Giustra Foundation, through the Sustainable Growth Initiative, combined forces which resulted in 1300 eye exams, and the distribution of close to 600 eyeglasses. Dr Meza returned to Juanjui June 25 & 26 for free cataract surgery, courtesy of the Clinton Foundation, for those discovered through our week of diagnostic work. In all, 57 Pyterigium and 45 Cataract surgeries were completed.

All this has come as a result of last October's Medical Mission. Several nurses on that mission had brought attention to many eye disorders among the patients they were seeing for other health issues. We expect our October 2011 Medical Mission will include a Cardiologist and a Neurologist as well as another Optometry team to continue the Eye Care program.

The brand new Juanjui Hospital for the Poor is expected to be open within a month and dedication scheduled for July. We had a tour of the shiny new facility and are looking forward to using it in October.

Thank You for your continued support of our work in Peru.

EYE CARE MISSION UPDATE

One week to go and I'll be in Lima, Peru, ready to take our group to Juanjui for a week of eye exams. I feel confident we have a very good group with Drs Rosina Cheung and Catherine Trubetskoy. Several representatives of the Institute of Optometry Sciences in Lima will join us for the flight from Lima to Tarapoto and then to Juanjui. We expect a busy week of eye exams and distributing eyeglasses where needed, before returning home. The data we collect during the exams will determine if we return at a later date with a full eye team. Photos and stories when we return. Thank you for your continuing support.

Information will soon be posted regarding our medical Mission to Juanjui in October.
